DIY :: KATE SPADE SATURDAY-INSPIRED CORDED KNOT NECKLACE

I was totally drooling over the jewelry on the Kate Spade Saturday website this past weekend.  There are a few necklaces and rings I really want to order as I believe they now offer shipping to Canada (as far as I can tell from their website). One of the neat necklaces I came across was the Corded Knot Necklace.  It sure is pretty, but I thought: "I could make something like that!"  So I did!  I thought I'd share this little DIY with you, in case you would like to make one, too!  It's super easy and you can make this necklace for less than $5!!!!

Materials:
▲  Approximately 2 meters (or about 6 feet) of parachute cord/paracord or colourful rope.  (I purchased mine at Michael's.)  The thicker the cord the "chunkier" your necklace will be.
▲  A lighter
▲  Optional: Magnetic clasp - my necklace used a magnetic clasp also purchased at Michael's
▲  Optional: E6000 glue

I tried my best to figure out how they did the knots for the Kate Spade version of the necklace, but I just couldn't figure it out.  Thankfully I found this other DIY Nautical Necklace at A Pretty Nest that will show you exactly how to make the knots, so click here for the instructions.  Once you get the hang of it, it's very easy.  Lay out your cord horizontally in front of you, and make your first loop (knot) about 2 feet away from the left end.  You can make as many knots as you want, and keep making them until you are satisfied at the length of your "chain" of knots.

You can now decide how long you want the necklace to be, and where you would like it to sit when you are wearing it.  If your necklace will be long enough to slip over your head then you can just make a knot to finish it off.  With the loose ends of the cord just make your knot so that your necklace is your desired length.  Then trim the ends of the cord so they are shorter, and use the lighter to singe them so that they don't fray.

Or, if you prefer to add a magnetic clasp you can do that, too.  Just figure out the desired length of your necklace and cut the ends of the cord to that length.  Then singe the ends of the cord with your lighter so they are aren't frayed.  Then use your E6000 glue to glue the cord into your magnetic clasp.  Let the glue dry before wearing.

That's pretty much it!  Super simple and affordable!  I do wish my necklace had turned out a little bit chunkier, as I LOVE a big, statment necklace.  Using thicker paracord will give you that chunkier effect, so it's up to you to decide how thick the cord is that you purchase.  I'd also like to try making one of these necklaces using two lengths of cord together (maybe two different colours), as that might increase the thickness and make it nice and chunky.  You can usually find much thicker cord at places like Home Depot, Revy or Canadian Tire.  Also, I did see some at Dollarama (a dollar store), as well, so it might be worth it to look around at dollar stores to see what you can find.  However, I didn't really like the colours they had in stock, so that's why I went with the paracord I bought from Michael's and I think it still turned out pretty cute.  It's such an easy necklace to make so once I find some thick cord that I like, I will probably make some more in different colours.  ▲
